I’m going to do my own blog thing from now on. This was a good effort and sure did put a big foot in my ass to get to making art. Peace out Artholes I’ll be at http://broughman.wordpress.com from now on.

Self Distortion for Clearer Self Reflection

Metronome Swingin’ part IIIish
So I played around a little more with some footage of my nude form casting shadows on the wall in my living room. Some of the footage had to be deleted as a flopping penis could be seen in the scene. There is an occasional hand that sneaks into the cameras field of vision via the left corner but i think I’ve managed to cut out all the flopping cock; whether or not that was a good idea i don’t know.
I had planned on making an audio track to dub over original audio but after hearing it I decided other wise. I was reminded of a performance by the late Merce Cunningham and his dance company. I was fortunate enough to be front row at Dia Beacon in New York and I remember how nice it was to be able to hear the footsteps and the breathing of the dancers. I could see the rippling of there muscles as they strained to hold position, luckily no one farted. It was a moving experience. Merce was a nice old man in his wheelchair. Despite his age he seemed very much with it and was probably the millionth forced introduction of the day just dripping with anticipation of getting the foot in the door with such a significant artist. Interest was expressed in my having an athletic background and I even got a card to call if I were to find myself in NY and interested in possibly working with them, if just as an intern. I fucked that one up. Here’s to Merce, may his work live on and his company keep progressing modern dance.
Try this: wobble your upper body left and right quickly as far as you can each way, keeping your hips and legs stationary. Notice the forced expulsion of air? That is why I kept the audio unmolested. I noticed this as a kid, thinking it was somehow my own movements stealing my lung power so I refrained from the motion for the most part.
Eventually I plan to use a few actual dancers rather than my own convulsions.

Self Finale
I’m coming to what I hope is some sort of milestone in this self portrait assignment. I’ve discussed with Bro what I think I like and don’t like about the drawing myself over and over… and it’s not taht I think it’s not helpful, I know I’ve been growing like crazy and redeveloping my hand-eye coordination with drawing, but I don’t like the idea that it has no end goal or a final product. This is my attempt at that final product if not just a very detailed study.
I started this a week ago when I couldn’t sleep so it can only be worked on at night when there is no sunlight coming into my room. I have a single desklamp lighting my face and a mirror on the desk. I’m using black colored pencil in a medium sized sketchbook, no more moleskine and pen which has been liberating.
I am posting the first few sessions with this while I correct parts that don’t look right and gather feedback. I haven’t decided how to finish it… basically everything remaining is black…. but that doesn’t seem very interesting.
Feedback welcome. WDT.

Metronome Swingin’
Here is some experimenting with an idea I have for a performance piece. Unfortunately I’m spending more time learning Final Cut Pro than actually making anything this point and this took me far longer than it should have.

ABC II @ Best Buy and Self Portrait
Today Griff Beheler and I recited The Alphabet at a local Best Buy. Here is the video with musical enhancements by Griff.
I also did another self portrait last night. Still managing a partial decapitation but included more body this time. My self’s (selves?) have been improving. I owe this mostly to getting a “proper” mirror which is large as hell and rests on the floor against the wall next to my bed. I also have a better light source… before I was usually crammed up close to the bathroom mirror practically sweating from the heat of 5 bulbs lined at the top, little shadow. Now I use a single 1950’s lamp I bought a a yard sale for 1 dollar u.s. cash money, nice shadows.

Keep an “I” out on Hirst http://hirstdamien.blogspot.com he is publishing a new line of work entitled “BEAUTIFUL INSIDE MY URINARY BLADDER FOREVER” He made a statement here. Machine. “Ugly Outside Your Rectal Bowels Temporarily” or should i play with the opposite of bladder as in holding things rather than a similar bodily function? “Ugly Outside Your Auditory Tongue Temporarily” I like that much better than my first attempt. But i used MY brain, bummer. Art?

Another self p no video dis tieeeeme Best Buy photobooth action

I recorded the sound of me taking a picture of myself taking a bubble bath.

I’ve been doing a lot of recording with all sorts of media. One of my wilder things is a little mini tape recorder. I plan to make a video of me navigating various parts playing specific points fast forwarding and rewinding to them in a planned out arrangement using the counter as reference. I’ve been obsessed with recording the “sounds of doing things.” Last night I recorded the sound of “taking a picture of myself during a bubble bath.” The above picture is the actual picture. I am splashing the water and after an introduction of my intentions a camera click can be heard from my virgin mobile crack dealer phone. Other sounds I’ve recorded are welding, skateboarding, all with proper introduction. Usually i say something like this “this is the sound of ____.”
Also since I’m, yet again, exploiting the Best Buy Mac island I’ll upload a few photos I found in PhotoBooth.

Jailbait ?????

ABC’s by Ryan B and a little self P step by step
The classic Sesame Street video of James Earl Jones has been a favorite of mine for some time now. I’ve wanted to do a series based on the recital of the alphabet and this is my first in that series. My next plans are to do “Heavy Metal” growls and screams of the alphabet using a public computer in Best Buy. This was done entirely on an IMac at the Virginia Tech Armory’s Mezzanine. Video was shot using the built in isight camera. Video was edited with imovie. Letters created using Adobe’s Illustrator and Photoshop. There is a Pulp Fiction easter egg of sorts and minimal play with typography. More to come.
Also I did a self portrait using a pencil from a “Auburn Hills Golf Club” a place that my roommate frequently golf’s. I took a few pictures with my 50 dollar “crack dealer” prepaid Virgin Mobile phone from Wal-Mart.

Ghost Bridge Rockman Pine Mycophalic Mydriasis Attic Video

River-Rockman with Steel Mushroom

Under the Pines by my house and cemetery

mycophallic earth work in Blacksburg Nature Reserve
Here are the cross processed 35mm shots of some of my new earth sculptures that I mentioned in the previous post.
The first is a Rockman holding a steel mushroom under “Ghost Bridge” in Radford, VA.
The second is a human form dug out of pine needles, lined with pine cones, and given mushroom cap eyes. This piece is in my front yard next to a family cemetery. Christiansburg, VA.
The third image is a male form with a mushroom phallus (I call them “Mycophalic”) Nature Reserve off Ellet St in Blacksburg, VA. I can be seen making this and other earth sculptures with mushrooms in THIS VIDEO.
Also I have a teaser/preview of some things to come with more music by GtoD.
Photos were taken with a 4 dollar Minolta that was picked up at Goodwill. Film used is expired and cross processed Fuji Velvia 100iso (thanks EBay). Video is from Blake Frost’s MiniDV camera in Chris Cox’s attic (Radford). Music in video thanks to Griff Beheler of GtoD.
